Initial Injury Care

REST:

You should not put undo stress on the injury. This does not mean that you cannot use it only that you should use caution. Let pain be your guide as far as how much and what you do.

ICE:

Apply an ice pack for 20 minutes to the injury.  This should be done at least 3-4 times a day and each time should be spaced at least an hour apart. More is not better, so do not leave the ice on more than 20 minutes.

COMPRESSION:

If you are given an ace wrap or compression bandage it should be worn when you are up and active. It should be removed before you go to bed at night.  The wrap should be applied snugly but not too tight. Make sure to begin wrapping the injured body part from its most distant point, working your way up the extremity.

ELEVATION:

During the first 24-48 hours after your injury (or as long as swelling is present) it will help to keep the body part elevated at a level higher than your heart.
