What is an Athletic Trainer?

Athletic training is a scope of sports medicine that is practiced by athletic trainers. Athletic trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.

To become certified an athletic trainers, an individual must graduate with Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree from an accredited professional athletic training education program. These programs include formal instruction in areas such as injury/illness prevention, first aid and emergency care, assessment of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and nutrition. Formal instruction is enhanced through clinical rotation experience. Once a student graduates, they must pass a comprehensive test administered by the Board of Certification. Once certified, they must meet ongoing continuing education requirements in order to remain certified.

Athletic trainers work in a variety of different settings. They can be found at high schools, universities, physical therapy clinics, hospitals, the industrial setting, and many more. If there is a setting where people are being physically active, you will most likely find an athletic trainer there to help with prevention and management of injuries/illnesses.
